What is Tempeh?
Tempeh is a traditional Indonesian food made from fermented soybeans. Unlike tofu, the soybeans in tempeh are not ground but fermented whole – a mold (Rhizopus) binds the beans into a firm, sliceable block. The result is rich in protein, probiotics, and has a nutty, slightly earthy flavor.
Tempeh vs. Tofu: The Difference
Tofu is made from soy milk and has a mild taste. Tempeh, on the other hand, has a much more intense, nutty-savory character due to fermentation and a firm texture that becomes wonderfully crispy when fried.
How to prepare Tempeh?
Fried
Slice, marinate in Kecap Manis and Sambal, and fry in oil until golden brown. Classically served as a side dish with rice.
Tempeh Goreng
Deep-fry thinly sliced tempeh – this creates crispy chips that can be served as a snack or side dish. Ready-to-eat versions are available as Keripik Tempe in our shop.
In Curry or Stew
Dice and add to curries or soups – tempeh absorbs spices very well.
Why is Tempeh so healthy?
- Very high protein content (approx. 19g/100g)
- Contains probiotics due to fermentation
- Good source of iron, calcium, and vitamin B
- Vegan and gluten-free
