How to make Nasi Goreng yourself – The original recipe with all ingredients

Traditionelles Nasi Goreng mit gebratenem Reis, Spiegelei, Kerupuk und Gemüse – indonesisches Nationalgericht mit Kecap Manis und Sambal.

What is Nasi Goreng?

Nasi Goreng simply means "fried rice" in Indonesian – and is also the national dish of Indonesia. It is made from fried rice with Kecap Manis (sweet soy sauce), sambal, egg, and various spices.

Ingredients for 2 people

  • 300 g pre-cooked rice (from the day before)
  • 2 tbsp Kecap Manis (sweet Indonesian soy sauce)
  • 1 tsp Sambal Oelek
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1 shallot
  • Oil for frying
  • Kecap Asin (salty soy sauce) to taste
  • Kerupuk (crackers) for serving

Preparation

Step 1: Finely chop the garlic and shallot and sauté in oil until translucent.

Step 2: Add the pre-cooked rice and fry over high heat until slightly crispy.

Step 3: Stir in Kecap Manis, Sambal Oelek, and Kecap Asin. Mix everything well.

Step 4: Fry fried eggs in a separate pan and serve on top of the Nasi Goreng.

Step 5: Garnish with Kerupuk, cucumber slices, and tomato wedges.

The secret: Kecap Manis

The most important ingredient in Nasi Goreng is Kecap Manis – the sweet, thick Indonesian soy sauce. It gives the dish its typical dark color and distinctive flavor.
