What is Bakso?
Bakso is Indonesia's most popular street food: springy, round beef meatballs in a clear, spicy broth, served with rice noodles or glass noodles, tofu, vegetables and, of course, sambal and kecap manis. In every Indonesian city, bakso vendors push carts through the streets.
What makes Bakso special?
The typical texture of bakso – firm yet springy, almost rubbery – comes from finely ground beef, which is processed with tapioca flour and ice to form a mass. This distinguishes them from European meatballs.
Preparing Bakso Soup (simplified)
- Boil ready-made bakso meatballs in beef broth
- Season with kecap manis, sambal and fish sauce
- Add rice noodles, tofu and vegetables
- Garnish with spring onions and bawang goreng (fried shallots)
