What are Kerupuk?

Kerupuk (also spelled Krupuk) are dried, puffed chips from Indonesia that are deep-fried in hot oil or popped in the microwave. They are the classic accompaniment to almost every Indonesian dish – especially Nasi Goreng, Gado-Gado, and Satay.

The Most Popular Kerupuk Varieties

Kerupuk Udang – Shrimp Crackers

The most famous variety: mildly seasoned chips with shrimp flavor. Classically pink or orange, very crispy after frying.

Kerupuk Ikan – Fish Crackers

More intense flavor than shrimp kerupuk, typical of Sumatra and Java.

Kerupuk Putih – White Tapioca Crackers

Mild in taste, very crispy – ideal for those who don't like fish or shrimp flavors. For example, Kerupuk Happy or Kerupuk Talie Mas.

Kerupuk Palembang

Premium Kerupuk from Palembang (Sumatra), known for their particularly tender texture and intense shrimp flavor.

How to Prepare Kerupuk?

Frying: Heat oil to 180°C and place kerupuk one by one – they puff up within seconds. Drain on paper towels.

Microwave: Some varieties can simply be popped in the microwave on the highest setting for 30–60 seconds.
