Drinks from Indonesia
In Indonesia, the climate is tropical and hot – it's no wonder that iced, sweet drinks play a huge role there. Many of these drinks are little known in Germany but are very popular within the Indonesian community.
Es Teh – Sweet Iced Tea
Es Teh ("iced tea") is the most consumed drink in Indonesia: strongly brewed black tea, very sweet, and served over plenty of ice. For home: simply brew strong black tea, stir in plenty of sugar, and serve over ice.
Sirup Marjan
Marjan is Indonesia's most popular syrup brand, especially beloved during Ramadan. Varieties range from Cocopandan (Pandan-Coconut) to Melon and Rosé (Rosewater). Simply mix with water or milk and serve over ice.
Bandrek – Spicy Ginger Tea
Bandrek is a warm drink from West Java: ginger, palm sugar, and spices. In winter in Germany, it's a great alternative to mulled wine.
Wedang Jahe
Simple ginger tea with palm sugar – warming, spicy, and very healthy. Good for colds.
